Coming January 31: Winter Book Group

The CTEI is hosting discussion groups for Dr. Paul Hernandez’s Pedagogy of Real Talk. Based on responses to an email invitation it appears that we will have at least a Friday book group.

On January 31 from 3:10 to 4:30 teachers will meet to discuss the first two chapters of the book. (Jeff will email possible discussion questions to participants who have emailed him about a week before). The group will also set 2-4 additional meeting times to discuss the book. It is expected that these will be at or around the same time on Fridays as this is the time the original group could attend.

If you are interested please purchase the book and read the first two Chapters before January 31. Then join us. If you email Jeff beforehand then we can better plan snacks and get you the questions ahead of time. The CTEI has a limited number of books for part-time and temporary full-time teachers to borrow. Tenured and tenure-track teachers can use the Professional Improvement Fund to be reimbursed for the cost of the book in August.

Fall Book Group: whistling vivaldi

Do you want to join a book discussion group, but worry you don’t have the time in to read the book during the fall semester? Are you in an employee group with professional development funds and you have a few dollars left this year?

The CTEI is pleased to help!

We will hold book discussion on Claude M. Steele’s Whisting Vivaldi in the upcoming fall semester. In the book Steele summarizes evidence that stereotype threat is real. He discusses short- and long-term impacts of stereotype threat. He also offers remedies to mitigate stereotype threat. In this video the author answers questions about his book.

The CTEI will purchase a few copies of the book in the fall to share. We encourage faculty to purchase their own copies- especially if they can be reimbursed for the purchase.

Fall Book Group Sign Up Is Open

President of Goucher College, musician, author, and scholar José Antonio Bowen will present at the annual CTEI mini-conference on September 21. Building on that experience, the CTEI will also offer book groups to discuss Bowen’s book – Teaching Naked Techniques: A Practical Guide to Designing Better Classes.

Book Group A will meet from 1-2 PM in K-224 on the following Mondays: September 17, October 8, October 22, November 12, December 3. Open this link to sign up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeJHOR0vBQaM50j0zsvuqiv4dG9s3tIU7zT7g1iwpxEtxtTzw/viewform?usp=sf_link

Book Group B will meet from 3:30-4:30 in the Hackett Conference Room (G-150) on the following Tuesdays: September 18, October 9, October 23, November 20, December 4.  Open this link to sign up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScEYuTZ_TPmHDv8nhlGnbU8ezssU1aR_jImOJrsx-MkaW7tvA/viewform?usp=sf_link

Local 1650 members are encouraged to buy the book because it qualifies for reimbursement from the Professional Improvement Fund (PIF). The CTEI has only limited quantities of the book to loan. We will distribute them based on the order of sign up and notify those who ask to borrow a copy if we can support them in a timely manner.

While we recognize professional responsibilities change, we hope that if you join the group you plan to attend the majority of the sessions. We hope that we can accomodate all interested parties, but may limit the size of the groups to ensure a quality discussion. Please join one of the book groups even if you cannot attend the mini-conference.
