HFC will host renowned educator and speaker Dr. Saundra McGuire at the “Teach Students How to Learn: Metacognition and Motivation are the Keys!” workshop on Friday, September 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Community Rooms of the Welcome Center (Building WC on the main campus).
Today’s students come to college with widely varying academic skills and motivation levels. Many students think that memorizing information just before examinations is tantamount to learning, and some never try to access their higher-order thinking skills.
This interactive workshop will present information about why some students lack confidence in their ability to learn and may never reach their full academic potential. The workshop will discuss cognitive science research-based methods used to facilitate higher-order thinking and critical reasoning. Participants will engage in a variety of activities designed to teach students how to learn better. We will also discuss strategies for motivating students and for transforming attitudes about the meaning of learning.
About Dr. Saundra McGuire
McGuire has strived to help students develop effective learning strategies in the years since she was a first-year graduate student in what is now the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. McGuire is an internationally recognized educator, author, and lecturer. She has travelled the globe, promoting strategies to help students become successful in their coursework and careers. She has delivered keynote addresses and presented workshops at more than 500 educational institutions in 48 states and 14 countries on six continents.
McGuire is also the Director Emerita of the Center for Academic Success and retired Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University. Prior to joining LSU, she spent 11 years at Cornell, where she received the coveted Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. She is also the author of the bestselling books:

McGuire graduated magna cum laude from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, LA, earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry. From there, she earned her master’s degree in science education from Cornell. She later earned her Ph.D. in chemical education from the University of Tennessee, where she also earned the Chancellor’s Citation for Extraordinary Professional Promise. McGuire is married to Dr. Stephen C. McGuire, a James and Ruth Smith Endowed Emeritus Professor of Physics at SUBR, with whom she has two daughters.
